Inline and Trimming, the highly automated combination for the production of high-quality books

The combination of Inline and Trimming positions itself as an efficient and cost-effective solution for the management of medium and ultra-short runs to produce high-quality books.

The line makes it possible to manage the production of paperbacks, otabind lay-flat books and hardback preparation in a compact configuration, integrating several processes such as the nipping of the book spine, the endpapering, the back and side gluing, the lining and/or cover feeding and the three-side cutting. This allows binders to automate book production and reduce manpower.

Inline, multifunctional back gluer

INLINE is a multifunctional and modular book finishing line, that enables multiple forms of finishing for hard or softcover sewn books. Its high degree of automation makes this line a perfect match for the short-run production of high-quality books.

PAPERBACKS

Inline features a compact cover feeder unit with automatic scoring bars that allow the creasing on both sides of the cover. An improved vacuum system guarantees the precise feeding of the covers including those with large format.

OTABIND(*) METHOD

Optionally, the line performs the OTABIND(*) method that consists of the combined application of the gauze and the cover to the book block. This technique makes the spine less rigid, improving the lay-flat property of a paperback.

(*) Otabind trademark is not the property of Meccanotecnica or of any of its affiliates.

HARD BACK PREPARATION

While processing books for the casing-in, INLINE handles blocks with different thickness on the fly. Two thickness-reading devices automatically set up the machine, reducing the make-ready time to a few seconds. The first, located at the in-feed, reads the book thickness and automatically sets the width of the transport channel. The second, located after the end-papering module, reads the spine thickness for fine adjustments of the glue application. This makes the line the right solution for digital printing and print-on-demand.

Trimming, fully automatic three-knife trimmer

Trimming is the new compact three-knife trimmer able to perform fully variable changeovers without operator intervention and to manage runs down to one book with the widest range of formats.

ZERO SET-UP TIME

Trimming features, upon request, BOOK-OF-ONE capability that allows processing books with different format and thickness automatically. The barcode camera acquires book and trim sizes while the thickness reading system completes the information to perform the set-up. This capability increases productivity when processing ultra-short run by eliminating set-up time and manual intervention.

COVERS WITH FLAPS

Upon request, the three-knife trimmer allows producing books with gate-folded covers in one pass. Vacuum heads open the cover upwards and downwards outside the cutting area to allow the trimming of the front. The system is activated via a control panel or completely automated via barcode allowing maximum production efficiency.
