The experience of Dimograf in the production of books in a highly competitive market

Dimograf Printing House was established in Bielsko- Biała in 1989. At that time, it had just three employees and printing machines in B3 format only. In 1998, the company moved into bigger premises that allowed the installation of several printing machines in B1 format and the establishment of a modern and cost-efficient bindery. Since that time, Dimograf has been investing in the most advanced machinery, pursuing the automation of production processes.

The company now has about 250 employees who work in an area of more than 8.000 sqm. It is one of the largest printing houses in the region, specialized in the production of books, calendars, and other commercial publications.

Dimograf currently produces about 20 million books per year, 50% of them thread-sewn, in both hardcover and paperback format.

Challenge

The company’s challenge was to increase its competitive edge threatened by increasing labor costs and stiff competition from other nearby markets.

Labor cost is increasing, and we face price competition with other eastern countries such as Bulgaria and Romania. Moreover, finding and retaining personnel is getting critical”, says Krzysztof Kantyka, Vice President of Dimograf.

Solution

Three Uniplex-asterPRO, gathering and sewing lines. Two installed in 2017 and the last one in 2019 together with an integrated Nipping system.

Results

With Uniplex-asterPRO, gathering and sewing lines we managed to reduce the amount of personnel employed on the three-shifts. Production is streamlined and we are now more competitive while keeping selling prices as before”, continues Mr. Kantyka. “The lines are easy to set-up and operate, one person handles the gathering of the signatures and the unloading of the books”.
